Pet owners know that taking care of an animal requires a lot of care and responsibility. Pets and their dandruff are constant threats to your HVAC system but don’t worry, we’ve compiled a few maintenance tips on how to keep your HVAC units in top shape when you have pets at home.
Replace or Upgrade Your Air Filter
Even if you don’t have a pet, you should still continue to replace your air filter about once every three months. If you have pets, it is recommended to change your filters once every 2 months to ensure quality airflow.
If you are wanting a filter that you do not have to replace as frequently, try upgrading your filter to one with a high MERV rating of 8 or higher that removes common pollutants in the air that are caused by pets.
Groom Your Pets
Keeping pet dandruff off our clothes, furniture, and surfaces seems like a daily chore that comes naturally. What should also come effortlessly, is the regular grooming of your pet! When your pets are outside, they can attract dirt and pollens that build up in their fur.
If it has been a while since you last gave your pet a good scrub, then those dirt particles have been collecting in your pets’ fur and spreading around your home. This can reduce the air quality in your home and even cause you to have allergies. If you regularly clean your pet 1-2 times a week, then this will ensure the air in your home is bacteria-free!
Hide Wires
Both cats and dogs seem to have a knack for getting into things they’re not supposed to – wires being one of them! Just like children, pets want to investigate every corner of the home, sometimes finding exposed wires that look good for chewing.
If you have pets or are thinking of getting one, make sure that all exposed wires around your HVAC units are hidden. Not only can a single bite on one injure your pet, but it can cause damage to your systems that are often expensive.
Get an Air Purifier
Air purifiers are great for making sure that your air filters are not being overworked. Having an air purifier can get rid of up to 99.9% of pet dander in the air before it can even reach your air filters.
If you have sensitive skin or common allergies, air purifiers can get rid of the pollens gathering on your pets’ fur and prevent them from spreading on the most commonly used surfaces of your home in your kitchen and living room.
